Roll of half dollars!!

SILVER!!

Someone bought a bottle of vodka with a roll of half dollars where I work today. As soon as I saw the roll, I knew they were old. Now I am the proud owner of 20 Kennedy half dollars from 1964 to 1969, all of which are in excellent shape. Two or three them could have just been busted out of a proof set. I was dumbfounded that the person was going to use them to buy liquor...
I would post a picture, but the digital camera is on a trip with the wife right now...

There is the very real possibility that those were stolen from someone's collection. I have worked at liquor stores and filling stations where "customers" have paid in silver one dollar certificates and silver coinage of all dates. A person who has amassed a collection of silver coins will NOT spend them at face value to buy liquor...think about it.

You could be right about them being stolen,but then again I have seen drunks sell a lot of things to get something to drink.Maybe this drunk didn't think his halves were really worth alot of money and spent them rather than trying to find a coin dealer who would really give him a good value for them.I would have taken them home with me and not really really lose any sleep over it.At least until the cops came after me!

Doubtful the police would be interested unless this guy keeps showing up and buying Coors Light wiith Barber quarters. The thing is, even a drunkard coin collector knows he can buy a lot more liquor if he sells his coins at two to three times their face value. I remember this kid who came into the gas station I was working at back in the 70's. He bought 6 dollars worth of gas with three rolls of Buffalo nickles. Now, tell me they didn't belong to mom or dad? Another time, this guy comes in and buys five dollars worth of gas with five one dollar silver certificates (not a wrinkle on any of them). It should throw up a red flag when someone makes a regular purchase with coins which are 90% silver.

I have had kids come into my shop and spend silver dollars at face value. When I got a chance to ask the parents about it, they told me that the grandparents gave them to them. No problem. No CCs yet though!

I've gotten one Merc Dime in change, and a washington quarter once. Even found a buffalo nickel at gas pump once, but have never been in the position to receive money or change through a business (like a cashier or teller would). I think it would be exciting to see what could be found.

thats great,you dont know how many times i caught my friends useing all silver dimes to get a cup of coffee,to them,its just ten cents.I'm sure you guys know that in some cases some of them dimes could be worth more than a few cups of coffee.To have some thing like that happen could fuel the rest of the week.

being a manager at the local village pantry,i go through lots of change and in 2 years have found hundreds of wheats,silver dimes and quarters and alot of nickels in the 1939-1959 range.Lucked into some halves and even had a lady spend 3 silver bullion coins for a pack of smokes while she was holding a 5 spot! Even got a few silver certificates from time to time.Its out there and sometimes its in the wrong hands.Had a guy one time use a franklin half for a paper!oh well.
