Pretty new to the site, and I noticed some threads where people would talk about roll hunting? I assume its going to the bank, getting rolls of coins, and looking for valuable ones? Sounds interesting, but is it really worth it, or is it something just to do for the thrill of the find? Also, what is a good thing to look for, half dollars, quarters, what? And how do I know if I find something worth keeping, or if its only worth face value?

well, its the winter version of metal detecting. You can go out and find some neat coins, but valuable ones are found rarely. However, a big score is not as rare as you think

Tavis its a fun hobby read the beginners guide to coin roll hunting .............its the 1 st post on this page ........it will answer all your questions

It's a real roller coaster. Sometimes you find good coins, sometimes not. It can be easy to get frustated.

Tavis,I am new to CRH. One thing I have learned is it should be treated as a hobby. When you think hobbies you think fun right? Well i think the thrill of the hunt is very fun. I gave up golf a few years ago. In golf it is easy to spend a couple hundred dollars a month playing with absolutely NO return on the investment. In this hobby you will atleast break even.

Consider this. A pre 1982 penny will sell for .02. Thats 100% profit. A wheat(58 and under) will sell for a minimum of .03 Thats 200% profit.

A War Nickel 42-45 which is 35% silver has a silver value over .90 cents. Thats about 1800% profit for the silver alone.*

A 40% half will sell for about 2.50(more depending on where you sell) thats 500% profit*

A 90%half will sell for aboput 6.00 thats 1100% profit.*

*Based on silver prices not numatic values

These are just some of the easier to find examples. Based on the years and such the coins numatic value could be much more than the metal value. Trust me there is nothing better than pulling silver out of circulated coins:-)

Another thing to keep in mind is to research what coins have errors. I try to concentrate on looking for errors that are worth up to 30 bucks. What this generally means is there are alot out there. If you find one circulated it wont be worth premium but anytime you can sell a penny for 5 bucks well thats good times:-)

Listen to and read the posts of others on here there are many more people better versed on CRH than I and remember if you deicde to do it. Get a system. Many will argue the right way to do it but just get something that works for you. Have fun! If you arent having fun this probably isnt for you. Dont get down if you go through a few rolls that dont net anything. It happens alot.

Anyway Good Luck! and Happy Hunting. We all look forward to hearing about your finds:-)
