My quick guess without any other imput: hematite, limonite, or very dirty (non-glassy)slag. How about streak plate test? Don't have a streak plate? Well, go to Home Depot and get a piece of bathroom tile with the back unglazed. That is your streak plate. Keep it for future use. But tell us what color the streak from this is. If there are different "materials" or layers in it, try to do those seperately. Try to break the rock in half, or if you have a tile saw, cut it in half. Let's see what it looks like inside. I have been breaking rocks (and eye glasses) since I was 4 years old to see what is inside them. Rocks, that is . Eyeglasses were accidental and incidental to the rocks.
