We have been blessed with some great December weather so I took advantage of it yesterday and headed to one of my favorite shelters. It was a good decision! How 'bout that heavy barbed Pine Tree and a Pine Tree made from Jasper?! A fire popped Brewerton made of some awesome black chert and an Ashtabula, two knives (Copena?) made from Carter Cave flint and my first pottery sherd rim. The sherd is baby butt smooth, I can't detect the faintest sign of manufacture on it. Also found both halves of two broken tools and quickly slapped some glue on them just for the photo. I'll redo that slop job when I'm forced indoors. Not sure of the type or material on the broke triangle. The flake pattern suggest Archaic and it's large size tends to say the same.

Love them shelters. I see the tell tale limestone deposits on the tools. I have cleaned the deposits off with muriatic acid. only takes a minute. and does not affect the patina.arrowheads 044.jpg

The deposits on these are nitre (saltpeter). It will wash off with warm, soapy water and a toothbrush but I prefer to leave them as found. I did the acid trick on a limestone covered tool last year....it does work...very well.

In the first picture is a nice Christmas tree type point. All are very nice and made out of great looking material.

Wow. That pine tree has the serrations going on. Loos like benton blades to me and like the brewerton. Those are some great dig finds. Are you sifting or just going thru it as you go? I do not always sift if I have a good hole. Thanks for sharing and good luck! That pottery looks like tn mud was used, lol.

Thanks TN. I am randomly sifting, out front till I find something, move to the back find something, move to the center..etc. The entire shelter has been good so far. As usual, the diggers before me missed a lot! I've found several Pine Trees but never one that heavily serrated. I think it was discarded early because of the break around the notch? Brewerton's are hard to come by in shelters, I was real happy about that one, only my second.

Those are awesome 1320, congrats.
Love seeing the shelter finds, thanks...

What's up buddy, mighty fine saw u have found there , jezus the serrations . That material is beautiful buddy, along with a good number of points. U ever tried to dig the first flat after a shelter if there is one? Crazy about the pottery,u can dig and dig and never find the other pieces ,like they just had one piece they kept in there. Hope u had a awesome thanksgiving. Dang snow storm coming Friday so I'll be walking some wet creek ground. Good luck In next dig

Ammonia works real well on limestone. I remove fossils from limestone with it once, I have them in the shop. Ammonia is not as harsh has muriatic, but it is slower.

Very nice finds! :icon_thumleft: That point with the serrations is really cool.

Really nice finds, congrats...
