Found this rock in gravel bed of a spring gravel. I've never seen one like it from around here. It's black like shale but isnt. It's very strong and don't break up like shale would. It weighs more than a normal rock the same size. It has little veins of quartz or crystals in it. Almost looks like petrified wood to me but I don't know. I've never heard of petrified wood around here. Anyone got any ideas or know what it is? 20170102_145038.jpg20170102_145223.jpg20170102_145241.jpg20170102_145301.jpg20170102_145342.jpg

Oh my, that's a tricky one. The shale like structure comes from metamorphism I'd guess.
Don't think it's petrified anything.

I agree its does appear to be a metamorphic stone not unlike granite. Probably has a high iron content, magnetite or hematite, so there is some weight. It shows folding common to metamorphic stone.

I'm thinking its more towards the mafic end. the last pic is slightly blurry, I'd love a better pic of that side.

Extensional basin rock. You were professional about the pictures, only you need to take the front side out of the shadow. Post a few more pictures in clean light and maybe good people of this forum can be more precise. Good luck.

Yep it probably derived from and extensional basin of some sort in the area but its still a metamorph of some type :)
