Here is an artifact or rock of some sort that I have recently found and need some help with identification. It came from Forsyth County Georgia. I found a huge Beech Tree w/ lots of indian writing on it. One drawing was what looked like maybe a turtle in its shell w/ only the tail out or something pointing straight down. I dug about a foot down and this rock was wedged between some roots. I cracked it trying to free it from the roots. It is a four sided pyramid shaped rock w/ flat top and a hole in one side. What is it ?

Looks like what we called "sprawls" (Elbert County, GA) left over from chiseling rock to make a foundation, chimney, fence, or even a monument, etc.

Check around the area for other stone of the same type. Should be some or evidence of some small quarry.

Looks natural to me. Mother nature makes some wild looking geo facts, holes and all. Neat looking area to hunt it looks like .

If any carving is done on a tree it will grow up the side of it as it grows. I've found this in many cases either me carving my name as a youngster or when I've found even older carvings way up in a tree. If it was done by an indian he wouldn't have carved it anyway. Indians in the south marked trees by altering there growth by bending them funny to even bending branches to grow off in a weird direction. There are many old indian trails in Alabama marked this way by altering the growth patterns of an old oak.

Carvings on a tree stay in the same place as originally carved. The tree itself grows up from the top and not continually up out of the ground like the Jack and the Beanstalk cartoon...d2

D2 I hate to disagree with you but I know of trees that have carvings way up in them from years ago. For example when I was 19 I carved my initials in a tree and they are 5 feet higher now. Same tree has my dads in it from the 60's way up in it. Maybe a differences in trees?
