Hi all I haven't posted in the rock or gem section before, but knowing the success with identifying items in the what's it section I thought I'd post here.

Being stuck inside because of the weather I decided to clean a few area in the house. I came across this. It's a rock/glass thing that my sons had acquired from a friends old farm house. They saw the rock and had admired it every time we visited the farm. It used to sit atop and stone wall for years. it was there when the house was purchased and sat there for years after. During one of our visits the wall was removed and this stone was given to my kids. After dusting it for about three years and sitting here reading the forum (wishing I had something to post in the today's finds section). I decided to take a couple of picture and try and find out what the dang thing is.

It's about approx 6"X5.5", it's really dark green but clear like glass with what looks to be bubbles inside. I tried to get the ruler involved but I see now that I have it upside down...sorry.

So here we go enjoy

Wouldnt it be nice if it was an emerald

It sure would...Not that I could do anything with it if it was the kids love it ! so basically it would be worthless dollar wise but the kids would still be happy and I'd still have to dust it, but at least I'd know :D

Hard to tell from pics you see. Have you looked at hardness? (moh's scale)
http://www.webmineral.com/help/Hardness.shtml

If I remember right it had about the same hardness as opal quote:
5.5-6 - Knife Blade-Orthoclase
is the hardness of opal.

Sorry that's not hardness that the size of the rock 6 inches by about 5.5 inches and about 4 inches thick. I can get some close ups if that helps

How do I measure hardness ???

Can I take it somewhere to have it looked at ?? I know very little about these sort of things. I tried looking on the net about what stones are found in PA, but I don't even know if it came from here or if it was brought in from some where else ? the people who owned the house before have passed so I have no info to go on...

Thanks

3S take a look at the link there are instructions there. If you still don't understand it ask again.
I know what you said is the size but I quoted what hardness you could await.glass is about as hard as opal, thats the hardness of opal I quoted. ;D

It looks like slag to me- :-\

I think you might be right "slag glass". I never knew there was such a thing. I looked up some pics and it does bare a good resemblance.

Thanks

Sorry my misunderstanding.. I can't scratch it with a knife blade and I'm not sure what Orthoclase is, but now I'm intrigued ?

Thanks for all your help
and sorry for the confusion :)

That owuld mean that it is harder then a knife blade (5.5 on moh's scale) Orthoclase is also a mineral:
http://webmineral.com/data/Orthoclase.shtml

Minerals with hardness 6 on Moh's scale: ;D

from my understanding only glass will have air bubbles in it. although I had a piece of fire agate that had water in it, so?? but my guess would be glass of some sort

MamaBear this will depend on the local geology some minerals like geodes will have "air" in them.(holes to be more accurate)

Hi 3S, my brother had one of those, his weighted about 10 lbs, we never did find out what it was, i figured it was slag glass, was really pretty though. If you could find out if there were any glass factories around that area years ago, that might be of some help to you, who knows someone may have carried it there long years ago and lost it. Would be nice to know for sure if it really was or wasnt slag glass.
