This was found by my Daughter about one year ago. They were building a New School and we were walking around the grounds, I was looking for Bottles and still trying to find my 1st Arrowhead. I've been looking for 20 years.

I cannot ever catch someone from the Scheile Musuem in Gastonia to identify it and we have very few Rock and Mineral shows.

Everyone that I have showed it to said that they would like to have a piece. Other than a LIWYFI I'll save for a rainy day.Thanks-goldnugget-Charlotte,N.C.

Can you scratch the rock with a knife, is it relatively soft, if so, it may well be Serpentine. That is what came to mind when I looked at the picture you provided.

For information and a picture see: http://www.mindat.org/min-11135.html

Yep, I vote green Serpentine too. NC has serpentine especially in the Western part of the state. Breezie

Re: Rock from North Carolina ( Charlotte )/ Follow up

The Rock is pretty hard and the white top layer may be Soapstone. I've tried scratching it but, if I recall it was hard. I tried and tumbled a few pieces to see if it would shine ( No ) . I was probably using sand from a sandbox. The whole rock feel pretty smooth to touch, I wouldn't actually call it greasy.. Thanks==
goldnugget== I hope it is not Abestos related , then they just built a school on top of this land
