Another possibility is the small black shiny pieces are Benitoite and the other is just the matrix they formed in,I live in central valley, If I was you I would research what mines are close to area you found it in.Current mining and mines that are closed.

If you have a black light Benitoite gives off a blue illumination under a black light.
