Forgive me for double posting but my curiosity got the best of me.

(pasted from other thread)
I went for a walk through a creek after work today and found this stuck in the mud. I dug it out, rinsed it off in the creek then lugged it back home for a better cleaning. It weighs around 10lbs (edited) or more. The white coloring will not scratch off and is not paint, at least not recent paint. The black ring must be from being buried or underwater at a different location, prior to settling where I found it.
What struck me was how round it is when viewed from the top and side. It's also quite smooth. The bottom is broken off flat-ish as you can see by the bottom pictures.
Folks over at the Today's Finds board are thinking nutting stone (but no indents) or fossilized dinosaur egg.
Any thoughts?

Re: Rock? Artifact? Fossilized Egg?

I was looking at some Hadrosaur eggs that had what can only be described as a 'nesting base' attached to the bottom. Though mine is lacking the usual, (but not always) crackling, there are definite similarities in size and shape. IF this is an egg, the broken flat portion is exactly where that base was located.
That's how I found it.

When I read the topic title, I though.... NAH!

But that pic looks interesting. Take it to the local U's geology/paleontology dept.

Re: Rock? Artifact? Fossilized Egg?

gopherdagold, you say, It weighs around 15lbs or more and is roughly a 6" x 4" rock?/something
the weight alone for that size is unusual, do you think it has iron in it, i would have it checked out
i put your rock in natural lite, in auto fix in the win photo program
it is a cool rock/something

Re: Rock? Artifact? Fossilized Egg?

I'm probably way off on the weight but after toting it for a half mile it felt like a ton. It may be closer to 10lbs. It is 7" wide by 4 1/2" tall, roughly. Not magnetic.
I edited my OP on the weight.

That REALLY looks like an egg. There seems to be a uniform "edge" or rim,...all the way around the perimeter,..like you would expect an egg to have. You NEED to take this somewhere and get it examined by a specialist. A geologist maybe?

You're right but I'm afraid that would be logistically impossible right now. :(

What is a water horse? Wiki describes it as a mythological creature.

I find a lot of rocks like this in the ancient river beds,I cant remember the type of stone it is though. They always seem to split exactly in half too!

There appears many suggestions. To me, an uneducated on rocks guy, it looks like a WELL rounded river rock, but like many before me, I do suggest you bring it down to the local U's arch dept. Cool find!!
