If you guys have been following a long, last week my bank didn’t have my weekly order of dimes and nickels because they wanted to have me call every week to reconfirm, and forgot to tell me they wanted me to do this. Because of my lack of coins, I needed to scratch the itch so a buddy and I went out hunting on a road trip and scared up 4x 1964 Half Dollars and a 1967. I identified 2 new banks that I will put into my regular monthly road-trip rotation (only had 2 so far).
The last bank we stopped at had half dollars…I usually only ask for $40 when they have them. This bank had what looked to be a big pile back by the drive-thru window in brown paper hand wrapped rolls. My buddy and I checked them in the car but they were all clad, so I figured those tellers were cherry pickers and forgot about it…
…Until the next day. Many of you have said “buy them all, no matter what.” I called a buddy that used to work with me as an IT consultant. I knew he’d be in that town in the next week, so I asked him to pick me up $50 worth and meet me on my way to visit my dad up in Western WI. If he did so, I told him I’d give him half of whatever we found. I figured if they were clad too, I’d confirm their cherry picking but if they were silver I’d find a way to get the rest. Before I met him I stopped at 3 other banks that I didn’t get to last week and found a single 1969 JFK Half. I met with him. The first 3 rolls were skunks, but in the last 2 rolls were:
4x 1964D JFK Half Dollars.
10x 40% JFK Half Dollars.
So, my buddy got half, which is about $68 in silver at today’s spot, plus the $50 in cash that he bought the coins with. He was excited. He just recently got his citizenship as a Bosnian American that came to the county when he was a young teenager escaping the Bosnian/Serb wars of the early 1990s. He’s a great guy, I enjoyed working with him in the past, and he deserved half for driving half way to meet me and just for being an all-around good guy.
My wife and I went to this bank and she was able to get $200 in halves. Since I was there last week and my buddy was just there earlier in the day she figured it would work best if she went in with a touching story about her grandmother as not to arouse the suspicion of the tellers. Sadly, they were all clad. Those 2 rolls that had 14 silvers must have been a dump from one old lady in that small town of a few hundred that got mixed in with all the half dollars that the bank kept for years as they came in a few at a time. I stopped at a few more banks on my way to my father’s place, all skunk as well. Nothing great to report.
My total takehome on the day was 2x 90% and 6x 40%.
