Visiting some friends this week in a little town near the central California coast - Nipomo, Ca. There's not much to do here except drive to the beach and eat at Jocko's steak house. I've only been here a few hours and I've already hit the few banks in town, i figured there'd be no coin roll hunters in the area, Nipomo has a population of only 12000. And if there was a hunter in town, the three banks in town were a block apart so it wasn't an inconvenience.
Two of the three had a few loose, totaling 13.50, skunk. The third had 5.00 loose and 280 in rolls. my heart started to beat a little faster when she told me she had the 280, and then my heart sunk when she said she just got them. I'd already handed over my cash and she starts plunking down the rolls on the counter, the rolls were plain brown but looked pretty new, now i was almost certain they were from another hunter.
As the teller passes the coins to me i notice the first few rolls feel loose, and short as well. One thing i love about halves is that with only 20 coins in a roll, you can always tell when a roll is short or over by just eyeballing it. I start to say aloud "this roll feels off...", and i unfold an end to pour it into my hand to count. Meanwhile the teller, trying to expedite the transaction is still funneling rolls to me and i had to set down the unfolded roll on the counter. I put the rest of the rolls in my handy canvas sack, smile and apologize for my sloth. I reach for the opened roll on the counter and as i'm about to pour the coins in my hand i stare into the roll and a WALKER is staring back at me. The teller asks "is it all there?", I kinda cut her off, smiled and said everything was fine.
Even if the roll was short by one coin, I had a walker to show for it. My mind started racing, remembering the last time something similar happened i ended up with a whole roll of worn thin walkers. I figured that I wasn't going to have the same luck again, and it was getting near noon and i was meeting my buddies for lunch. I left the sack with the rolls in the trunk and kept the walker roll in my pocket, thinking i may open it up during lunch. Usually, when opening rolls in a box or otherwise i save the best rolls (ones showing silver naturally) for last. I figured I'd buck this trend, as my luck hasn't been very good lately.
Midway through lunch i hit up the restroom, just before I enter the lav. I bend over to pick up a nickel and out of my shirt pocket spills the roll of coins. I make a futile attempt at catching the roll before it hits the ground. The loud crack against the tile floor turns all eyes in the restaurant on me, i smile redfaced, hoping the roll hasn't shattered. I look down and notice the roll appears to be intact, save for a tear down the roll long ways. I reach down to grab the roll and can see the glint of silver along the tear, i get giddy and scurry into the bathroom. At this point i'm not going to carefully unfold the creased edge of the roll, I tear into it completely mutilating the wrapper. I'm staring at 20 walkers, worn smooth on the edges, but walkers nonetheless!!
Heading back to the table, I forgo the story for my chums, most of them think I'm a little silly for going to banks all the time for rolls of coins. I just sit down, finish my lunch and continue to jaw about how the giants are really going to be awful this year. I go through the motions all the while my mind is racing about the other TWO HUNDRED & SEVENTY DOLLARS in the trunk......
I get back out to the car, pull out of the lot and head down the highway, I get about half way to my friend's place and the withdrawals become too serious. I grab the bag out of the trunk and dig in.
Could I be so lucky??
YES YES YES YES
I just finished the last of the rolls and I'm still giggling as I type this.
Out of the $280 or 28 rolls
5 rolls of walkers (mostly 42-47, some from the 20s and some dateless)
18 rolls of franklins
2 rolls of 64's
25 rolls of 90%, I can't believe it, I almost can't afford to keep it all. The other three rolls comprised of 45 40%ers and some bicentennials. My first BIG BIG BIG cache, I've found a full roll here and there but never anything like this, i doubt this will ever happen again. I don't know how I'm going to make it through the rest of this week, without hitting some more banks. There are a few other towns near Nipomo, this may be virgin territory. I guess I'll break the news to my friends and tell them I'll be buying the steaks tonight. Happy Hunting all.
