Well technically its two different road trips since I stayed at home overnight, but I am just going to combine them into one post.

Took a couple of vacation days following the Fourth. Friday morning I had to be home to get DSL set up. So now I am back online at home after a short hiatus. :)

I'll start with the road trip on the 5th.

Since I had planned on this trip since Tuesday, I had just under $1575 in cash plus just under $950 in coin to cash in already prepared so after I got the kids off to daycare around 10 AM, I headed out of town. A bit later than I originally planned, but oh well.

Bank #1:
$15 in loose halves - Skunk

Bank #2:
Cashed in about $750 (kept $200 in halves in case I needed to fill a coin machine bag to buy it.)
Found 3 Canadian quarters(1968 Nickel, 1982, 1984) and a 1 Canadian dime (date unknown, magnetic) in the self-serve coin machine as I was cashing in.
$2 in loose halves - Skunk

Bank #3, #4, #5:
Skunk

Bank #6:
$15.50 in loose halves bought from the coin machine - Skunk

Bank #7:
Skunk

Bank #8:
$54 in loose halves bought from the coin machine
32 - 40% Kennedy (1968-D(11), 1969-D(21))

Bank #9:
$367 in loose halves bought from the coin machine
As the teller was getting the bag off the machine you could here the sound of silver. She made a comment that it sounded like there was some silver in there.
Ended up with only a few.
1 - 90% Kennedy (1964)
3 - 40% Kennedy (1965(2), 1966)
4 Foreign
- Guatemala, 1 Quetzal (2000)
- Mexico, 10 Pesos (1998)
- Sweden, 5 Kronor (1981)
- Venezuela, 5 Balboas (1990)
the bag also had 1 Dollar, 1 dime, 5 pennies

Bank #10:
Bought $54 in loose halves off the coin machine, 1 box as well as 40 additional rolls from a second box
The $54 produced
2 - 90% Kennedy (1964, 1964-D)

The 40 loose rolls - Skunk

In the box, I was hoping for the best when I saw a walker on the end of a roll for the first time. But in the end the box only produced 2 Walkers, both 1943, also both in the same roll. And a grease-filled die 2000-P.

Bank #11:
Had about $65 in halves in the coin machine, but didn't want to sell them to me. They did, however, let me do an even exchangefor the ones I wanted. ;D
Ended up with
2 - 90% Kennedy (1964(2))
10 - 40% Kennedy (1965(2), 1966, 1967(3), 1968-D(2), 1969-D(2))

Bank #12:
Bought 80 rolls of halves that had been from their coin machine.
2 Franklins (1963, 1963-D)
2 - 90% Kennedy (1964, 1964-D)
18 - 40% Kennedy (1965(4), 1966(11), 1967(2), 1968-D)
3 Post 2001 Kennedy (2002-P, 2003-D, 2004-P)

Bank #13:
Only had $95 left so I bought 9 fed rolls
1 - 90% Kennedy (1964-D)
3 - 40% Kennedy (1966, 1968-D(2))
1 Post 2001 Kennedy (2005-D)

At this point I was out of cash and 6 miles from the nearest bank I had an account at, so I ate lunch and then drove around until I could find a place to park in the shade and search through halves. After finding a nice spot on a country road, I edge searched all halves except the sealed box.

Bank #14:
Upon completing my edge search, I cashed in just over $1900. While cashing in I asked if I could buy the first half dollar bag that filled if it was somewhere close to full. They said sure, it had $742.50. So I bought the bag.
Must have been someone's dump bank as I only found:
2 Post 2001 Kennedy (2004-P, 2005-P)
1 Kennedy Error (1974-D DDO)
1 Grease Filled Died (2000-P)
1 Foreign (Australia, 20 Cents(1982))
1 Car Wash Token
1 drink token
and 1 quarter

oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Bank #15, #16, #17:
Skunk. And two of the banks mentioned that someone had been there earlier today.

Bank #18:
$23 in loose halves - Skunk

Bank #19, #20, #21, #22:
Skunk

Bank #23:
1 loose half dollar - Skunk

Bank #24:
Since banks 14 through 23 were all in the same town and were basically worthless, I decided to drive back to the bank I got the 9 fed rolls and buy the rest of that box since it produced pretty well so far. Also figured I would finish off the town it was in since I ran out of money before I finished the banks there.
First stop back into town got me $10 in loose halves - Skunk

Bank #25:
I picked up the other 31 fed rolls at the same bank as the 9 I had picked up earlier.
1 Franklin (1963-D)
1 - 90% Kennedy (1964)
3 - 40% Kennedy (1967(2), 1969-D)
4 Post-2001 Kennedy (2005-D, 2006-P(2), 2006-D)
Not as well as I had hoped, but not bad.

Bank #26:
$52.50 in loose halves from the coin machine
1 Foreign (Jamaica, 20 Cents (1986))

Bank #27:
$70 in hand rolled halves - Skunk

That was the end of the 5th. I was going to stop and metal detect in the town I was in, but I was too hot and tired so I just came home.

Now on to the 6th.

After waiting around home to get DSL setup and then going out to eat lunch, I finally started travelling around 1:45.

Bank #1:
Cashed in $1749 in halves from yesterday.

Bank #2:
Was previously told that I could buy the bag of halves off of the coin machine once it was full, so I brought in $200 in halves to finish filling it, but apparently she had a change of heart and I could no longer buy the bag. :P I wasn't too happy with her, but not much I could do.

Bank #3:
$2 in loose halves - Skunk
The teller said they had just shipped $1000 off to the fed last week. Just missed it. :'(

Bank #4:
$0.50 in loose halves - Skunk.

Bank #5:
Skunk

Bank #6:
$409 in loose halves from coin machine
4 - 40% Kennedy (1967(2), 1968-D(2))
1 Gold Plated 1982-P
and 1 bent quarter
Also picked up a box of nickels, just for kicks.

Bank #7:
Skunk

Bank #8:
$190 in loose halves from coin machine
I could see the silver as they were hand counting them in front of me.
Ended up with
7 - 40% Kennedy (1967, 1968-D(3), 1969-D(3))
1 Post 2001 Kennedy (2002-D)

Bank #9:
$387.50 in loose halves from coin machine
It was split into two part $245 that was in a plastic bag in the vault and $142.50 that was in the coin machine. As they were hand counting the ones that had been in the coin machine, I could hear silver being moved around. When they were done, I asked about the one dark colored one that they had separated out since I it was on back counter that I couldn't see. Turns out it was a foreign coin Great Britain, One Penny 1896. I asked if I could buy it. They said no, but I could just keep it since it was foreign. ;D They also gave me a 50 Pesetas from Spain.

When I got home I started with this bag as I knew it would be good and it didn't disappoint.

Ended up with
95 - 40% Kennedy (1965(2), 1966(5), 1967(26), 1968-D, 35), 1969-D(27))
as well as the 2 Foreign coins mentioned above.

Bank #10:
$9 in loose halves. They shipped off $1000 in halves yesterday.... :'( Missed again. Though after talking to the teller I got the impression it had been picked clean anyway.

Bank #11:
Skunk

Bank #12:
$170 in hand rolled halves and $100 Eisenhower dollars produced
1 - 40% Kennedy (1969-D)
and
100 Eisenhower Dollars
1 - 1971
3 - 1971-D
1 - 1972 Variety I
3 - 1972 Variety III
12 - 1972-D
1 - 1974
10 - 1974-D
19 - 1976 Variety 2
2 - 1976-D Variety 1
11 - 1976-D Variety 2
5 - 1977
13 - 1977-D
5 - 1978
14 - 1978-D

So after all here is the brief summary:

Searched 210 half dollar rolls ($2100) and $2639 in loose halves ($4739 total)

Ended up with:
2 Walkers
3 Franklins
9 - 90% Kennedy
176 - 40% Kennedy
11 - Post 2001 Kennedy
8 Foreign coins
1 - 1974-D DDO
2 - 2000-P Grease Filled Dies.

A pretty good couple of days. And I still need to finish the nickels. I think I'll do those now. ;D

WOW,you have much more patience than I.

For the $ amount you searched,I think you found a high percentage of silver.Much better than I have done in the last few years of hunting.

You essentially searched 9 1/2 boxes and ended up with 190 silvers, thats a (2%) silver rate!My average for box searching in the past 5 years has been about ( .3% ).Nice job.

What was the excuse/reason that the teller gave you who said you could buy the bag and then went back on her word? That was pretty bad customer service on her part.

The one question that keeps popping up in my mind when I read these road trip posts is:How many miles did they have to travel to get those coins?

Would you mind sharing your miles traveled for the 2 days? Thanks.

Thanks,I was thinking you had traveled a lot more than that.Very good results.

$60 in fuel, but you ended up with $220 worth of silver and had a fun trip as well.Well worth the effort.

Do you remember what excuse the teller gave you for not selling you the bag that she promised to you?

Not sure what your gas costs where you are, but it was only $25-$30 in fuel since I filled an empty tank with $35 before I left, I haven't refilled since, and I still have some fuel left.

She was babbling about an issue if there was a miscount or something or other and rerunning coins through the machine (which I didn't understand since the bag would be off the machine). No biggie, happens occasionally, plenty of other sources around.

Essentially, she just changed her mind from the last time I spoke with her 3 months ago and came up with a bogus excuse to justify it. Since I plan on getting other coins there occasionally in the future, I wasn't going to push it. In this case I know it is not a corporate policy, but a branch one, but you could tell by the way she was talking that she wasn't going to budge. Since I get most of my coins through other branches of the same bank, no sense to get a bad reputation and spoiling the rest of my "fun".

That's even better.I guess I was figuring what it would cost me to travel that distance and forgot to consider that other states have fuel at a much better price.

I just got gas tonight and paid $3.16 per gallon,so that's what I was basing it on.Makes it hard to go on a road trip with prices like this and the little(if any) silver I would potentially find :'(.

As far as that teller goes,I understand what you mean since you plan to buy other coin there in the future.I was thinking she had said this to you over the phone just before you started your trip, but since it was a few months ago,she may have figured out why you wanted it and decided to hold onto it for herself,to check it,when she had the time ???.

GMan-
You are relentless!
Thanks for the post - that's a lot of work!

Re: Road trip 07-05-07 and 07-06-07

Wow. Now that is a road trip. Great job.

HH.

Re: Road trip 07-05-07 and 07-06-07

I filled up at $2.95/gallon on Thursday, but it has since jumped to $3.15 yesterday.

I get around 25 mpg in the car I was driving.

185 miles / 25 mpg * $2.95/gallon = $21.83.

Oh and the ox of nickels...about average
25 pre-1960 Jefferson (1940, 1940-S, 1941(3), 1951-D, 1952-D, 1952-S, 1953, 1954, 1954-D, 1955-D, 1957-D(3), 1958-D(4), 1959, 1959-D(5))
8 Canadian (1975, 1980, 1985, 1988, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2005-P)

Re: Road trip 07-05-07 and 07-06-07

Great totals there. I'm looking forward to my next road trip. I hope it's soon and I get totals like those!

Re: Road trip 07-05-07 and 07-06-07

I finally got my camera/picture programs reinstalled today so here are some photos of the road trips take.

Top Row: Walkers and Franklins
2nd Row: 90% Kennedy
The vertical columns are 40% Kennedys arranged by year (left to right - 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968-D, 1969-D) with each stack 10 high unless it is the bottom stack of the year in which case it may be less.

The foreign coins are off to the left of the 40%'ers.

Off to the right are all the other miscellaneous: the post 2001 Kennedys, the 1974-D DDO, and the 2000-P grease filled dies.
