River bank detecting tips/hints?

Get into some old photos and records. Find those old swimming holes and such. Any old crossings where the water might be shallow could be of interest. Perhaps around old bridges too. I think some river banks are inherently trashy though, both from people dumping over the years and drifting debris.

Jarl pointed out a good tip! Try and find old crossings, mostly these are all listed on old maps you may find @ the library.
