I have no idea if this is the right section to post this, so I welcome you to tell me where to go (okay, I left myself open on that one). I'd appreciate your guidance.

I have a very unique chamber pot and have searched and searched to find something like it, but all the ones I've seen are very primitive.

There is the outer wood encasing the porcelain chamber pot, with a lid that is leather inside and a pocket for reading materials. There is an actual seat to sit on, which can be lifted to access the inner chamber pot.

It was patented in January of 1878, with a revised patent the same month.

I'm attaching photos, and if you have any info or questions, please write back. Thank you.

Caroline

Hello Caroline,

Welcome to TNet, and thanks for showing us your find. I'm not seeing the chamberpot well. It appears to be a lidded stoneware crock, with a badly damaged lid.

Is the base of the enclosure made of tambour? I'd like to see better photos, if you're so inclined?

It was patented in January of 1878, with a revised patent the same month.

Where are you finding this patent information, please?

Thanks for the reply Surf! Here are some better pics that I took outside. Hope these help.

Thanks for the additional photos, Caroline,

It's a really nice piece, in my opinion. Hale & Kilburn, in their early days, did a huge business in producing seating for railroad cars. It looks like your model went for $7.00, if I'm reading the fine print correctly. Shame about the airtight lid.

The actual patent is a refinement of an earlier Patent by Hale of the Tambour material, strips of wood glued to a canvas backing: Patent US199373 - IMPROVEMENT IN FURNITURE STRUCTURES, and the earlier Hale Patent: Patent US146065 - IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIRS

Hello Surf, Thanks so much for taking the time to check this out for me. I actually just found one on Ebay and they were trying to sell it for $395 and it didn't have the ceramic lid at all, and if someone buying it isn't familiar with the original piece, they won't know the difference. This information will be so helpful when I try to sell it. I think things sell better when you can justify the price, and that's where your info will help. Again, thanks so much. Caroline
