Just found this ring today back at an older homesite. Pics don't really do it justice, but seems to be gold inside and around the edges with a copper band through the center on the outside. Still dirty in the pics. Going to try and be gentle cleaning it in case the copper part has some kind of engravings on it. Soil out here seems to do a number on old copper/brass really making it easy to disintegrate. What really has me interested is the markings on the inside: "crown" "18" "lion" Can't seem to remember where I seen it, but I think that's a older English marking that may be able to give a date. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Thanks! Quite an interesting link there. Really has me interested in the markings more now especially since it has both the crown and left facing lion. If I am correct that could mean at least pre 1822 since it has the lion. Really nice. Thanks again.

Yet your ring is obviously gold plated instead of solid which would make the hallmarks fake.

Well I have turned up a few 1800's coins in the same area, and the pic really don't do it justice. The blackish green area in the pic that I figure is copper actually terminates evenly the whole way around the ring making it look like it was on purpose. Don't make much sense, but everywhere there it gold, except the copperish band, there is no sign of gilt wearing off like a lot of other things " watch chains, buttons" found in the same area. Just kinda letting it sit for now till I can figure a good way to work the copper tarnish without damaging it if perhaps the reason for the band was for post sell inscribing perhaps. Hehe, would be interesting to find an ancient forgery too though.

Take some 400 grit sandpaper to it. If it fake, you aren't hurting anything and if it's really gold under there then you aren't going to do anything that a light buffing won't remove.
