Ring hallmark help...

Found this ring this afternoon at a 1800's house...looks like it may be onyx (or black plastic??), but I don;t think it is gold...the hallmark says "Made in USA" followed by a U with an arrow thru the middle of it horizontally....any idea what this U hallmark means??

Nice ring. The U with an arrow through it stands for Uncas. I think they make sterling and costume jewelery. Hope that helps.

Goldgrubber...thanks much for the info. The ring is definitely not sterling so I would say it is likely costume.
