I've found things in my yard that make me think there was another home on the property prior to the 20th century. More than my share of old nails, more than my share of old hinges, and now a keeper for an old rim lock set.

It's probably all in my head!

The rest of the finds from 8/1/23 and 8/2/23. The Williams shaving cream tube was from back in July.

You do have 19th century sq. nails, and a mix of finds that would make me say "barn site". Granted there are 20th century mixed in there as well but when you dig sq. there's no doubt your on older dirt.
So yes on something older under the newer.
See it often, where a newer is built on the older footprint-easier to get a permit (the need to ask permission for everything).
I've dug up a Vermont copper 50ft from a 1980's house-yes it was on a previous footprint (actually this is the 3rd house)

I know for sure from a 1939 ariel view, there was a small barn on the neighbor's property. It's at that corner of mine that I find most of the horseshoe nails. The older square nails and hinges come from my back yard and the other side of my lot. The house across the street is 1840. An 1874 map shows that farm owned the land my side of the street is on. That plot of land is now home to 6 modern houses. The 1874 map shows no buildings on the land. Maybe my lot was just the dumping ground for the 1840 house and barns.

No coins on my lot yet earlier than mid 1940's. However, I have found late 1700's lead pewter and tombac buttons. I also just received confirmation that a buckle I found is 1650-1720 sub-annular shoe or knee buckle.

I may never know for sure if another structure existed on my lot.
