Dug what I think is a 35 Remington or similiar caliber shell casing but what has me stumped is the headstamp. Hope you can make out the numbers and letters from the pics. There appears to be a 1948 or 1945 other than that I don't have a clue. The case is about the size of a 30.30 but is rimless and has a shorter neck. I'm counting on you guys

The 7.9 opposite the date is for 7.9 Mauser. Better known in this country as 8mm Mauser. The FS is an arsenal in Turkey. Lots of similar ammo is still sold cheaply to shoot in the many surplus rifles sold here or brought back by veterans of WW1 and WW2.

Unique headstamp to be sure. 7.9mm of 1945 maybe? (0.311" - U.S. 30 cal is 0.308").

I'll throw my guess at 7.9mm Mauser. All of these below are 7.9mm Mauser rounds.

Wow! that was fast, right on the money, and very interesting info. Thanks to all of you, you're the greatest. You see digging big game hunting campsites in the mountains is the bulk of my hobby and the shells are an indicator of the age. This information lets me know this site was used post war and one of the hunters was hunting elk with an cheap, imported and maybe mailorder 7.9mm mauser from Turkey. By the way Charlie is the cartridge in the middle of your pic with the red marking a tracer round? That would make an interesting big game round. Again thanks.

Per the Conjay.com site where I lifted the image:

7.9mm Mauser Armor-Piercing-Tracer (Patr. SmK L'spur trop.) (Germany)

Not sure a smoking 3/10" dia. hole on the close and far sides of the hide is the best way to subdue a critter but it would make it easier to see if you'd connected. ;)

A lead mushroom is still the deadliest thing in the woods.
