Rifle butt plate, 1841 US Mississippi rifle?

I believe it is a butt plate off of a 1841 US Mississippi rifle but I'd like some backup from some of the experts on this board.

I can see the US stamp.

Interesting thought. With the screws still in it I wonder if the entire gun was there, at least the brass remnants.

I'll have to nit pick that area
