Spent the week off the grid with my mother on the coast of Rhode Island this week. Took the Excal underwater snorkeling off the beach and came up with a couple of war nickels, a silver Rosie, a 0.69 round ball (the middle one), and...8.7 gram 14K yellow gold ring! However, my favorite find of the weekend was the 41st Regiment button (cleaned with Naval Jelly) in a park; my first Rev War button! The two other 0.69 round balls were found nearby. Also found two really worn Seated dimes in the same park. Wow, really tired, but happy to be home and back on the grid.

Congratulations on the very interesting and productive hunt!

Button is way cool, the gold ring is big and beautiful! Nice job!!

Sweet button. That ring isn't to shabby as well!!!

Thanks for your replies and links. Yup, the button is my favorite find this weekend. It came out of the ground black, I mean black. I rinsed it underwater with a toothpick and a toothbrush and, although I could read the 41, decided to try some Naval Jelly and LIGHT scrubbing with 0000 steel wool. It was a risk, but it really made a difference. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I mentioned other coins I had found, so I decided to upload a quick picture of them. The two Seated dimes are from the dirt and are AG condition, and the Rosie and war nickels are from the sea. You can see the effect the saltwater and clay made on the silver! Also from the water was this brooch. It appears to be a Japanese person with a fan. I cleaned it with Naval Jelly with little effect, so it's not silver. I believe it to be pewter(?) Sorry about the yellow lighting; "unnatural" light.

You have made a great find, your button is from one of Rochambeaus Expedition Particuliere units they are the Bourbonnais Reg.Royal Deux-Ponts Reg. Sanintonge Reg.Soissonaise Reg and the Lauzuns Legion. Take some time and research each one to find the 41 st,. If you find any more button please don't clean.

Yeap, thats a nice button.

Oh crud; it's supposed to be 1780. Corrected.
