The Rhode Island State Seal now is an unfouled anchor. Not sure if it has changed.

A fouled anchor would indicate a branch of the military - navy - coast guard - etc. and not general service to me.

It's a Rhode Island State seal button and from the type of D Evans mark Dates 1850 to 1865. Evans took over Robinsons in 1848.

Just for information, when did the State Seal switch from a fouled anchor to the non-fouled anchor used today?

I'm not sure when it change but I know there are RI buttons with the fouled anchor with the backmark GOODWINS PAT. JULY 27, 1875. I'm thinking they probably changed shortly after that as there are Span-AM RI buttons with the unfouled anchor.

Thanks. That's good to know and help date other button finds.

You're welcome. Most of the later buttons with the unfouled anchor are really plain looking next to the earlier buttons. I don't know if anyone had ever noticed but the detail on most of the civil war and earlier buttons is a lot better than that of the
Span-AM & Indian war period buttons

Same here. We do the best we can. This is a great place to learn. All of us.
