This was very recently dug. It is from a hilltop not far from York, PA, which in late 1777 into 1778 became the capital of the US, as the Continental Congress had to evacuate Philadelphia due to the American loss at the Battle of the Brandywine on September 11, 1777.

This hand forged iron item, which I believe is an American carbine sling buckle from the period was found on a hilltop not very far from York.

Found with it were some .50 musket balls in a prior dig and a .69 dropped hand made ball today. A Rev War artillery button was found on the same site some months back. Several tombac buttons have been found here also.

The Yanks and Confederates also passed over these hills and ridges during the Gettysburg and perhaps also the Monocacy campaigns of 1863 and 1864.

What do you think? It fits a 2" belt.

It looks hand made in the pic. My only thought is that being so small, wouldn’t it have rusted away in 200 years? JMHO.

No, We still find plenty of iron items from the 18th century around here. Soil is moderate. This piece was on a well drained hilltop. It would not lay in water. It also did not build up a large amount of rust as it has probably been exposed to the atmosphere from time to time over the years, it was in a plowed field. It has not been cleaned and you can see even though rusted, with a break in the ring, it can be saved.

Some hand forged large iron rose head nails were found nearby also. Last year I found a 17th century cannon eye bolt in another nearby county. Took 3 months to conserve it.

It is absolutely hand forged. Rang up pretty high on the Deus, and the forged items generally will do that.

Vferrari was with me and two other gentlemen. We had six hours there. I'll try to post stuff later. It was a long, long day. I only got four keepers. Gotta go, the dirt is waiting!
