revolutionary cannon tool??

hi folks!! i need some help here!! i will send this over to the whats it section but i figured i would run it threw here first to show you guys. NO its not a watch! and NO its not a compass! this is solid one piece cast with three holes! one on each side and one on the bottom. my buddy found this at a rev site and seems to think it was some type of tool on cannons. when he found it there was a one foot chain on it. it looks familiar like ive seen it on a mag before. has any one ever seen one of these before thanx. willy
