You'll probably need a better quality picture to get an accurate assessment.

Tough one

That's pretty rough. Pewter needs to be treated before it even dries or it turns real bad. TNet member Vino found a perfect pewter 1812 button and it lost condition when it partially dried.

Anyway, good luck with the ID and happy hunting

Good to know. Thanks

From what I've seen pewter tends to turn a dark grey in the ground
Your item appears more like corroded white metal to me and not a typical 230 year old relic

good luck nailing it down

I agree that I'm not so sure that pewter. Pewter usually has a pretty distinct color and usually flakes badly around the edges first

I was thinking that but haven't dug enough pewter buttons to be sure. You're so smart Abe! Lol. Maine thawed yet bro?

Snowing as we speak but it's going to be sunny and 50s all week. I WILL be out this week. Prob Friday....and I am NOT smart. Believe that my friend

Where abouts in Maine. I've got a lot of family in Presque Isle. Great digging up there!

Once it is cleaned up a bit and under a microscope you may be able to identify it with one from this list.

Good Luck! and Good Hunting!

Navy buttons

Agreed with others, not pewter looking & not a button from the looks of the reverse.

I'm in the midcoast area. Topsham/Brunswick about 25 min north of Portland. We've actually got history around me back to 1607. The Popham colony was around the same time as Jamestown.
