Your local historic society, college library and newspaper are likely online. Check them out first.

This all came about by simply typing into the browser the following:

history of marinette county wisconsin

You can do the same with the history of the city. Remember this though...if you can find it on the internet, so can everyone else. To get a better chance of finding and researching unsearched areas....follow Jeffro's advise.

Also, I've found my "favorite" resources to be local histories writen by local residents from "back in the day". For example: Small Town Histories and annuals or in my case a fantastic book about the Montana State Pioneers - Lots of valuable local information by the folks who lived it! And don't forget about that old person down the street... get them talking and you'll be suprised how much they remember about the local carnivals, fairs, dances, gatherings, schools, revivals, picnics, etc...

EBAY Active & Completed Items.
(type in the name of the place)
also check in descriptions.

Look for post cards , Pictures, Histories etc.

If the area consists of many towns, Townships, Counties,
Etc. check for them all.
Don't forget Abreviations. (TWP. State name spelled out & abbreviated)
example : Pennsylvania, Penna, PA
Also Misspellings. ( tenasee for Tennesee, Crove for Grove, Etc.)

Keep it Simple. When I search for Dauphin County,
I type in Dauphin Pa. , Dauphin Penna. & then Dauphin Pennsylvania.
& when I remember Dolphin Pa, Dolphin Penna, & then
Dolphin Pennsylvania.

Sometimes you can pick up Township Histories on Ebay
for practically nothing. These History books contain lots
of Pics & intresting Stories.

Don't forget to click on those Beer Cans, & soda Bottles.
the Discription may include, Where they were made
and alert you to a Brewery, you didn't know was in your neck of the woods.

Search the word "Found" in Titles & Descriptions.
just add the town , State, County, whatever
& search.

Sometimes people add Histories to their Descriptions
to make the Item more attractive.

Other words to add.

Defunct, gone, Died, Ghost ; You get the point.
