These are 2 coins I found in the Republic of Panama last year. I had been researching an old 49er gold rush rest stop that thousands of people from all over the world passed through as they crossed the isthmus of Panama to get to the gold fields in California from about 1848 to approximately 1855 .

This was my 3rd time visiting the spot, but my first time with my AT Pro. The spot is now nothing but jungle with no identifiable landmarks or ruins beyond the old trail it runs by. I would have never known the settlement was there had I not done the research. Anyway, I found two pretty cool finds. A 1848 American large cent about 8 inches deep and then about an hour later a 1849 French franc about 6 inches deep. I also found a bunch of old broken mule shoes which is no surprise since that is how people crossed the isthmus of Panama for centuries before the railroad and cars took over.

Very nice finds!

I lived in Panama as a kid due to my father being stationed there with the military. I wish I would have been into metal detectin back then as I would wander through the jungle and all over the American bases. I can only imagine all of the treasures under my feet now when I think back to how old some of the bases were and the history of the Panama Canal. Congrats on some great finds!

Panama

Hey Joe, Thanks for the comments! I always love meeting and talking to "Zonians" about life back in the day. There were some metal detectorists and bottle hunters back in the American Zone days and they found some AMAZING things. Here is an excellent example that makes my mouth drool whenver I read it: Panama Canal Society

I've attached photos of some more recent finds I've made in Panama. The history of the isthmus is astonishing and it may be the best (certainly one of the best) places in the world to practice the hobby.
