The area where I live on the south fork of Long Island has a rich history of fishing and farming. Many people survived by doing both. A friend of mine owns an 1850 farmhouse his family built within eye shot of an ocean bay. A family cemetery is on the property. Remnants of an old ice house too. He said I am welcome to detect it but it has been hunted many times before. Maybe people swept up the coins and bypassed the relics. But relics tell the stories of life. I found this farm ribbon medallion and many haul seine net sinkers. Behind his barn, under thorn bushes, is a big cast iron cauldron from the 1800's that was used to pine pitch the nets. You can see the residue on two of these sinkers. And just off of his front porch I found the hard times token which goes to show you don't be discouraged if you are not the first to detect a site.
