I do more gold than artifacts so I don't dare guess. But the rust can help I'd you found it in a dry place where rust is slower Maybe old but in a wet environment it will rust very very fast. But keep looking!

If you clean it so all the headstamp numbers are visible, it should be easy to track down.

Not really, I'm not in the business of cleaning iron residue from brass, you could start with lemon juice for 20 mins at a time??
