Hello All,

I dug this little item a few weeks ago. I believe it to be a religious medallion of some sort. The site was occupied briefly during the 1860s and 1870s, and certainly abandoned by 1900.

I guess what I'd love to know is if any of you might be able to find an example of a similar medallion so that I can see what it says. Heck, even at least some ideas about what it Might say would be helpful to me--and could help me figure it out. The lettering in the first photo at the right hand side, seems to say -ICIL or -IGIL. The reverse side is some figures or symbols inside a dotted oval, with an inscription around the outside of the oval.

Best Wishes,

Any ideas on what types of inscriptions were on these pieces?

Starting bottom left and clockwise it might say "oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee." (miracle medal)

The back does not look like a miraculous medal. Here is the back of one.

might be old roman dating (latin style) letters

I have a hunch it is a Latin inscription, because the back appears to be abbreviated in a way similar to many latin abbreviations:

Letter *(dot) Letter * Letter * Letter, etc.

I have looked through patron saints galore, and can't find any with the same last letters as the only letters I could make out in the first photo--and I don't think that such a medallion would be likely to have a really obscure saint on it.  The thing is--those letters that I can read, are not a common letter combination in Latin, which is why I thought they might be a name.   :icon_scratch:

looked through my own collection and I didnt have an example like your find. Its more than likely worn as a piece of jewelery than from a rosary by the tell tale worn out loop.On the 2nd pic from what I can see looks like some kind of lettering, but its hard to tell.Did you soak it in peroxide to lightly clean it? I dont know if the older ones were alluminium ,seems like they were brass. Will try to find an example to compare to yours but there are hundreds of them.BTW their one of my favs finds

Thanks for the reply. :) I really like this find too. It is most certainly brass, although there has been some damage by fertilizer over the years. I only toothpicked the piece--I didn't use peroxide on it. I guess what I'd like to see is a few examples posted that are 19th century examples, so that I can see what kind of lettering or words I'm looking for. And maybe then I can make sense of the faint/partial lettering.

Best Wishes,

BuckleBoy,

Your find almost resembles a St Benedict medal. There are several variations. Yours could be an older one from 100 years ago.

Your medal has a P and B on the bottom back side. The St Benedict medals have the letters C S P B.

Here is a link with some of the medals available today: http://www.benedictinemissionhouse.com/SBMedals.htm

Nice find!

That's what I've been looking for. Moe, MANY thanks to you!

And thank you to everyone that helped.

I should be able to formulate some more guesses about the inscriptions on the medallion now.

I'm marking this one "Solved."
