Religious item???

Came across this in town today. No idea other than it could be a religious token of some sort. Its about 1/2" diameter and looks to be made of brass. I am not sure what the symbols mean on the front with odd type of letters or characters. The odd shape (not perfectly round) is intended because of the back side design. So any body want to give me some clues, cuz I have none .
