Hey guys! I got this stuff on monday.. bammer and I went to a new spot, which unlike the town of lambsborn (which was the 2nd line of defense of the siegfried line).. this place WAS part of the actual siegfried line! All along the road going up into the mountains there were bunkers ALL OVER THE PLACE.. many destoryed, but many still intact! I was quite amazed. This area we were hunting at had a lot of fighting. There was a little cemetary near by that had 60 german soliders buried in it (no i didn't dig in there of course) but the area around it was littered with foxholes, trenches, you name it. One of the main reasons why we went there was to find 4 panzerfausts this german antique dealer (he did a lot of MDing back in the day) buried a few years ago. I guess he has a lot of them so he didn't bother to take those home... well we never found them that day (infact we talked to him today and know exactly where they are now) but we did find a lot of cool stuff. I got a nice signal near a bomb crater, but I thought it was shrapnel (I find tons of the stuff).. so i was chopping away at the dirt. Unfortunately, for me, it wasn't shrapnel at all! It was a nice bayonet scabbard! I dented the back a bit (ouch) but it will pop out nice.. it was about 1 inch deep. It even has some of the orig. leather "frog" on it still. Then right around this certain tree, we found a TON of stuff.. german Y strap clips (looked like suspenders, LBE to the us military guys), gas mask lenses, many many unfired bullets, stripper clips, brass ammo can ties, and this piece of what looks like the remains of a shoulder board. It has cloth around it which had plastic on top.. on the back is some kind of clip. I am not really sure what it is. We also found many little bits of brass.. we weren't sure if they were from the bands that go around arty shells or what.. but they were all over. We think that either some ppl got killed (the tree prob didn't exist at the time) on that spot, or they stacked extra gear there after someone died.. I dunno. I am sure that the ammo was prob in the leather pouches but they rotted away. If we keep looking there I am sure we will find more stripper clips.
It started getting dark so we headed to that town Kirkel where that ammo dump was located. The last time we were there, we found a LOT more emplacements.. a few of them are tank emplacements (you can tell how they are burmed up, will take pictures the next time). It was pretty dark while we were digging there. I did find an american grenade fuse that was already popped without being attached to a grenade.. So we have found french grenades/parts, german grenades/parts, and now american grenade parts. The dirt there is GREAT.. its very sandy and is mixed with clay so everything we have found there is always well preserved. Hopefully I get my car fixed soon so i can start digging again. Check out the pictures! Happy Hunting
Here is the american grenade fuse I found at Kirkel... the hammer and spring at the top is in GOOD shape.. you can also tell it was popped since the detonator at the bottom of the stem is gone.. We also found a grenade ring near by.
Here are those brass bits we found at our new spot... one side has a wide line going down it, the other sides have little horizontal notches.. have no idea what they are
Here are the bullets that we found around the tree.. and these are just SOME of them. The soil there isn't great so they didn't preserve well.
Here are some Y strap clips, the long brass ties to a can or something, and some uniform buttons. The nice silver looking clip i found at an MG 42 nest a few blocks from my house.. i put it there to show you guys what the other ones would of looked like. The D rings were also parts to the Y straps.
Some burned/broken gas mask lenses.. I found one complete one.. the rest of the other one is still by the tree somewhere. We even found some of the metal rims that go around the lenses
Here is the bayonet scabbard. According to the antique dealer, he said you can find these all over the place if you just kick up the dirt with your feet! maybe I can find the bayonet next time.
here is a gun barrel plug and some shrapnel bits
Here are some bullets that are attached to stripper clips.. I am sure there is more to find there.
Thanks for looking and happy hunting!!
