No idea of what it was used for, but my guess is that it's made
of copper. Someone took the time to do that stamping by hand,
so that makes me wonder why it was ever painted.

What kind of location did you find it in? Old home site?

Good guess! Yes an old homestead. Also found a huge smushed crotal bell and a double snake head belt buckle within 100 feet of each other, within 250 feet of an old rock foundation and well.

What's got me puzzled is that it's hand stamped copper sheet
formed over a cork like wood center. This was something special
to it's owner.

Back when this was made, country folks just didn't have much in
the way of fancy stuff, but someone took time to stamp that pattern.
Strikes me odd that this type of copper is found in Canada, as this
kind of stamped pattern might be much more common in the
US Southwest.

It's very old, and very cool. Beyond that, I'm stumped.

The first thing that came to my mind was a beer tap handle. And, I don't drink, never have!

pool stick tip ? The small end reminds me of the way a pool stick is made prior to the plastic ferrule being put on that the actual fiber "tip" is attached to. Just a shot in the dark

My guess: the handle for a pair of opera glasses; 1890-1910 based on apparent star motif:

Note the decorative similarities to this piece:

Now note the appearance of the tip:

And compare it with the following piece:

And the apparent presence of filler material in this piece:

I believe there are at least a few similarities.

Just a thought.
