I just returned from a business (and pleasure) trip from the UK yesterday. A coworker there knows I am into metal detecting and gave me this piece she found in her grandmothers garden.
Does anyone know what this piece could be, and who that is on the front???
There is a touch of gold gilt showing through on the back.
The only person I could think that it reminded me of was Sir Walter Raleigh (pictured).
That would be very neat, since I live in the Raleigh, NC. area. ;D

Thanks for your help,
Sir Doug of Eatingham

LOL Doug, you go across the big pond and bring back part of Raleigh! It's hard to tell who it is, but I've got to agree it looks like either Sir Walter Raleigh or Shakespeare. Breezie

Ooootay, here's my WAG . . . .I think it is part of an Ansonia Spelter figural mantel clock. They were gilded, and all sorts of do-dads, figures, and curly-cues. Do a GOOGLE search on them, and check out all the images.

I found this listed on KOVELS, but this is a 'figure' of Shakespeare, not just his face. My point: If Ansonia made a figural clock of Shakespeare another company could have made one with a medallion like yours.
Category Clocks
Pattern or Item Ansonia
Description Shakespeare, 8-day, Time & Strike, Spelter Statue, Iron Base, C.1894, 15 In.

My other guess would be part of an antique metal ornate vase like pictured.

Breezie,
Thanks so much for that info. Looking at that clock, you could very well be correct. It looks like an ornate piece that could have been on one of those.
The picture of the vase has also helped me ID some other mystery pieces I have dug years ago. They look very similar to the legs on that vase.
Thank you very much,
MM
P.S. Us NC folk have to stick together. ;D

No detecting this time. Mostly business, and by the time I got back to the hotel it was dark. The towns roll up the carpet at 5:00pm too. ;D
I should be making occasional trips in the future though. I already made a good connection though with a lady who is in their version of the historical society. She owns an 1860's house too.
I found the people to be very courteous once I got out of London.

All my work was in London up till about five years ago. Now, on the odd occasion I do have to go there, it makes me want
to scream >:(

Nobody speaks English any more, specially on the building sites and I've never been out of work so much >:(

I did find one friendly young man there on our first day. He looked like Vin Diesel and was a waiter at the Italian restaurant my wife & I ate dinner at. He rubbed my chest & back a few times while humming some tune. I looked over once and he was doing some dance moves too. Needless to say, I told my wife, "people are awful friendly here in the UK."
At my age I'm not sure if being hit on by the young guy was a compliment or insult. :dontknow: :icon_scratch: :tongue3: :laughing9:
The icing on the cake was when I was going to leave a tip, and he told me that was not needed. True story!

Which part of London was it?

Not the Soho district, it was just off of Oxford Street in an Italian restaraunt section.
I'm feeling violated now. :icon_pale: :crybaby2: :nono: :love5:
