Relic day at the mansion and I'm happy

It's the middle of January, just about everywhere the ground is frozen solid. But, I just knew
I could count on the good ole mansion to give me a bit of ground I could at least pretend
to be hunting on. ;)

I found this one rise that has pretty much a southern exposure and I could dig til my heart was
content. Or my back said quit! :)

I've been hunting this place for nigh on to 2 years now and it STILL gives me a find or two!
Don't find very much of the "good" stuff anymore but just being there is a blessing!

Here's the take:

Strange little piece of metal. It came from almost 10 inches
down and pretty much came out as you see it here. The
lil piece to the right came out of the hole pivoting around the pin.
Free & easy. :dontknow:

2015 (11).jpg

A dunno, a 12g Remington Shurshot, and a small bullet.

2015 (12).jpg

A miniature railroad spike? :icon_scratch:

2015 (13).jpg

Maybe a door latch piece?

2015 (14).jpg

Maybe a coffee pot lid? That's a porcelain knob.
the rest is non-magnetic. :dontknow:

This place is always interesting! :)

I am always happy when I turn a coin of ANY kind
in this place! LOL

But, I don't think Blingie & Fishy were too thrilled
by my roasted 1941-d nickel. :)

Hang in there northern folk, the ground will open soon. :)

Thanks for peeking!

Man, I thought you were done for the Winter:laughing7: Good stuff!

It Warms Me heart, WHADIFIND, that someone here can have a good outing.
Hoping for anything this weekend, but the grounds reeeealy hard still. might go above freezing tho

I saw that nickel and thought....well, never mind what I thought! Congrats on getting out. I did a trial test in the woods last week and it was a no-go, so after this week of sub-20's, I haven't even tried. The good thing is: only 2 more months 'till I can, lol. I believe that to be a coffee pot lid too. Not sure on the others?

Thanks for the kind words! I'm just trying to keep the faithful strong. LOL

Ya know, there's a combination that can work. Even up there in the arctic. ;)

Although the sun is only doing half it's job lately, it can still help. Ya just gotta find the spots that
have the right combination. What I've found helpful but not foolproof are hills that have a lot of
southern exposure AND a lot of leaves, grass and such. The decaying leaves generate a bit of heat
and the sun helps to give a few spots where you can dig. It has to be a spot where it can get a lot of the sun though.
Not too shady.

Of course, I figure you know all this OD, but maybe someone else can benefit.

It's not the best way, but it comes in handy when one gets stir crazy. LOL
I've found fairly loose soil in the middle of winter every year. Just gotta get creative. :)

When I saw that nickel I thought the same thing! I even said, "Oh no!!" LOL

This is the 2nd or 3rd time that I found something that kind of "speaks" of a
campground in this one area of the mansion. Maybe, it might be worth my time
to concentrate a little in that area. I've found the remnants of a lantern, a coffee pot
a large cent and a few buttons in that area. Hmmmmmm.....maybe another plan? ;)

Thanks!

Congrats on a few cool relics! There is no getting out here in SW Ohio, 2-3 inches of snow on the ground and been below freezing day and night for about 12-13 days in a row. Although a couple buddies of mine on another site displayed some recent finds pictures of Barber and Seated Dimes to go along with a nice arrowhead frozen in a clump. While hunting with a Pickaxe, I kid you not! Extreme Detectorist!! I guess now I have no excuse........lol
Good job taking what the conditions give you, way to be creative!!

Yeah, extreme. But, I just wonder how they might feel if, when they finally find their 20 dollar gold piece, and they find it stuck? Right on the end of the pickaxe?

Some things are worth the fight, but finding by ripping up and with abandon for what might happen to a piece of history, is NOT a good thing. IMHO.
