RELIC: 1878-1879 Boyd's Battery (new pics added)

I found quite a bit today at the fresh water lake: 5 Q, 12 nic, 8 dimes, 32 penny....1 gold ring 10K gold filled....AND~~A BOYD'S BATTERY: I have never seen anything like this before. I didn't find the whole thing....just the middle part...sigh, I don't even remember where I found it because at the time I thought it was a clothing do-dad....So, I didn't make a mental note, or I would be out there trying to find the rest of it. After cleaning and reading the inf. on it I found it on the internet. The following is the information and a pic of the pendant. (I will post the pic of the one I found tomorrow).

This is what American Artifacts says: This is the rare and famous Boyd’s Battery Pendent, consisting of a series of discs made of copper, brass, nickel & other metals that claimed with the electrical positive & negative charges will cure all diseases. It was to be worn around the neck for cure all diseases, especially various rheumatic conditions. J.C. Boyd of New York patented his device in London on January 17, 1878. Dr. Boyd’s 1878 advertised claim was “The Blood is the Life. An astounding discovery”, “Accomplished at Last, The efficiency of electricity”, “For all diseases wear the Battery around the neck”. He once published an inch-thick book on his galvanic battery made up entirely of testimonials.

I love this hobby! I have also attached a pic of my new hand of rings for 2007! I have nine so far!

Re: RELIC: 1878-1879 Boyd's Battery

That's very nice. What about a photo of the 10K GF ring? And does the ring have a ratio mark i.e.:1/10, 1/20 and so on?

Re: RELIC: 1878-1879 Boyd's Battery

Thanks! I will post a pic of the ring and the Boyd's battery. The ring was resized at some point. It has a 10K mark. It looks like maybe a GF, for Gold filled.....

You know, its interesting.....I hunt in an area that has lots & lots of md'ers.....Yesterday, I grid out an area that has high people traffic; aka poptops, and found very few quarters, pennies, or dimes, but I found 13 nickels; and of course the gold ring. I think there may be more gold for those of us willing to pay the price of digging up poptops.

Thanks for looking!

Re: RELIC: 1878-1879 Boyd's Battery

Like you, I had no idea what the piece was and was surprised to read the history, I found mine about 4 years ago and yes, just the center piece like you did..

An interesting find and sure would have been nice to find more than just that center star like piece.

Don

I added the photo I took back in Jan 2004 of mine, along with the website photo of what a complete one looked like...
