Hello all! I was hunting today when I found this trade token. Unfortunately I don't know its date, but I have discerned its origin (Reily, OH). On the back it (faintly) reads "Good for/5 cents/in trade."
Nice find! Lipscomb's OH Merchant Tokens book lists just the 5¢ version of this. The 1920 Census shows him as a farm laborer. The 1930 Census shows Harry Freed as a confectionery merchant (i.e. candy store) - that business often used trade tokens. Harry Fread registered for the draft in WWII in 1942 and said that his employment was "Fread's Cafe - also runs school bus". From 1949-59 the city directories show him as a laborer and grader operator for the county. So I would imagine this token dates from sometime between 1920 and 1930 to WWII.
Any chance that you could take a good in-focus closeup of both sides (use the macro feature on your camera) that could be posted on Richard's Token Database - TokenCatalog.com Thanks!
