Now I am posting this here since where I found it has produced artifacts and beads in the past so I am wondering if it is perhaps native related? Does anyone have experience with finding "holed" coins among sites that have produced lithics? Would it be common for native peoples to wear these or even adorn regalia with coins, perhaps the way other cultures do? Any insight appreciated, and any examples (pictures) would be great as well.

I had a similar question posted on "What is it?" under the title of "I know what it is but who did it". My avatar shows the coin in question, an 1847 large cent. I think some of these certainly were made/ used by natives as baubles and bangles, but determination, unless found in direct context, is difficult.

It is entirely possible that this could have been ornamentally, or spiritly utilized by Native Americans.

the question that I have is where was this coin found? It's dated 1871 and I assume that it was found on the western frontier, it's not likely to have been from the east, although it's possible.

Another consideration would be that it was worn on chain or thong be any one, as is still the habit to this day. I have several coins in my collection with holes drill in them to be used as jewelry. Hope this was a little helpful, and continued luck in your hunting.

yep, west coast WA state...village site.
