Hey all,
I was out for about an hour yesterday. I found this, what looks to be somekind of an old copper, about 7" down? intangled between some tree roots. It would be the same size as a regular penny if some of the edge wasn't worn away. Around the edges are what looks like reeds that are concave. I was looking at different types of coins and the reed looks close to whats on a flying eagle cent. Does anyone know if the reeds on the flying eagle cents are concave?, or convex?, I can't tell from the picture...
The intire center is gone, completely worn smooth, all that's left is some pitting from the elements...
I'm not sure what else it could be,, any ideas???

Its not a flying eagle cent. They are thicker then modern pennies, do not have reeding on the edge, and because of the nickel content come out of the ground colored differently then other copper coins. Half cents are usually about 22-23 millimeters, and the reeding would look like that if it was worn nearly smooth, but that would put it bigger then a normal penny, which is 19 millimeters. If I had to guess, since, I'm at work and don't have my reference books here, I would say more likely either a token, colonial or from another country.

Thanks for your two cents all... ;D
Yep,,, this ones got me stumped... It does kinda have the coloration of an old nickle. There was no green, or other colors on it, like with most pennies... I guess in the shape it's in, The world may never know... ;D
Definitely looks to have some copper in it, might have some nickle, not sure...
Thanks for looking,,,

If you have time and could post a larger pic or scan, I'm getting better at Photoshop, maybe i can try to bring out some detail's.

Thanks again all,,,
You may be right Free. It is a little thinner than a penny, and it looks as if nothing has ever been in the center, or it has just completely worn smoth... The park has yielded several coins of that time period, so it is a very good posibility...
Thanks for the info :)

A planchet would be completely blank. The edge is formed when the coin is stamped. If the planchet was stamped it would have an obverse and a reverse.

I don't know what you have there, Leon, but I don't think it is a planchet.

Sorry Guys,,, The forum is getting away from me... ;D
Yep Free,,, The reed around the edge looks to be the same, very close....
I would say your probably right on this one... I have looked at this thing through a microscope, and I don't believe anything has ever been stamped onto it... Here's another pic of the one I have,,, Not sure if it's much count,,, still can't get a too good of a shot of it...
