I found out from a fellow metal detector that one can redeem for full value those corroded clad pennies. I took 14 rolls marked damaged coins to my Bank Of America Branch in Lake Arrowhead and received $7.00 in cash. The teller asked if I had any fire damaged coins as we had this major fire that roared through our mountains and burned homes over a year ago. I might turn in my burnt coins from the Laguna Beach fire that took my parent's home. Gretchen.

Gretchen, good idea, as long as they are "clad" pennies and not "wheaties". Wheaties are too valuable to be turning over the bank or mint for replacement, and long time collectors know how to clean them up themselves. ;D Why take 1 cent for a wheatie, when you can get 25 cents from a wheatie holic? :D I just happen to be one of those afflicted persons myself, a real, unrepentant, reprobate wheatieholic!!!! ;D I got pounds of 'em! 8)
Also, the U.S. Mint will buy all the old coins you wanta exchange (don't give 'em nothing but clad though) but be careful, because even some clads are becoming rare and more valuable. They will also replace damaged Bills as long as more than 50% of it is recognizable. Less than that, forget it. ;D Comanchero

comanchero, I recently found half a twenty dollar bill. It had been run over by a lawnmower and the other half was shredded and scattered so that I couldn't recover it. I took it to a local bank to see about redeeming it. I was told that the rule for salvaging damaged paper money is now that you have to have both serial numbers legible to redeem it. I was told that too many people had been cutting bills in half and redeeming both halves at different banks. Leave it to the crooks to spoil an honest mans endeavors. JIM
