Red Velvet Cake
1/2 cup Crisco 1 tsp. vanilla
1-1/2 cup sugar 1 cup buttermilk
2 eggs 2-1/2 cups flour
2 tsp. cocoa 1-1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 oz. red food coloring 1 tsp. vinegar
1 tsp. salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream shortening, sugar, eggs. Mix cocoa and food coloring add to mix. Add flour and buttermilk alternately to mixture. Mix baking soda and vinegar and add quickly to mix. Bake 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.
Frosting for Red Velvet Cake
1 stick of butter 8 Tbs. of Crisco
1 cup sugar 3 Tbs. flour
2/3 cup milk (tepid temperature) 1 tsp. vanilla
Cream butter and Crisco. Add sugar. Add flour a Tbs. at a time. Add remaining ingredients and beat 15 minutes at high speed. Spread on cooled cake.
