Field walking today. (If you’ve read my posts, you know it doesn’t take a lot to make me happy.)
I found this flat, symmetrical piece with obvious plow scarring. I looked up “red sandstone”, which I believe it is. Several sites relegate it to far eastern USA and Europe. I don’t imagine anyone from out east deposited this in an Iowa bean field.
So maybe it’s not red sandstone after all. I thought it worth rescuing. Great paperweight, if nothing else.

If it's sandstone, rubbing an edge with a file will produce sand (as opposed to just rock chips and dust, which don't look like sand).

I didn’t get much of anything with a file. Must be hard. Doesn’t have the waxy look of chert/flint/jasper. I was guessing sandstone; maybe not. Thanks
