This is a reddish brown pebble, 1.75 inches long weighing 2 ounces. Cannot be scratched with a nail file. It also has a thin white vein of another type of rock on one side. Very much resembles a piece of stew beef with fat marbling. I picked it up in a gravel-paved parking lot in Rensselaer County in New York, but being paving material, could have been transported from anywhere. I am curious what it is. Thank you.

Could be Sard. :dontknow:

The obvious answer would be a piece of petrified beef stew, but that's unlikely. :)

The rock looks to have lived a fairly tortured life back in the past.
It's pretty cool looking.

I also have a 1 inch diameter rock that looks like a small salt potato that I found in the same area. Got a lunch started here.

Might be flint/chert. If I recall, it is harder than steel. Most unworked flint I have found isn't that smooth, but that could be due to being in a parking lot.

Boy you've got some stones....
My first thought was a piece of carmel, but when you said beef it changed..
love finding perfectly round rocks too.
Both of these have the look of being river washed.
sorry I can't help on what type of rock they are.

Consider re-posting on the Rock/Gem forum at Rocks/Gems. Someone there will probably be able to ID.

I also noticed black rocks in that area that have the same look as the red rock - semi-shiny and fine grained.

Rock and gem forum would be the best I agree
