Red Dirt

Hi all, I'm relatively new to prospecting. I've got a good spot on a claim on a river. After a few feet of digging dowm behind several large boulders in a boulder field on a an inside bend of the river, I came across something interesting. I was making my way through the usual pebble and small rock layers in between all the boulders when I suddenly the dirt turned to red. Red dirt is not natural to this area. I'm wondering if this is an ore bearing layer that hasn't been exposed to air in a very long time? Possibly near the bedrock of the river? I'm just curious if any one has ever come across this before.

the red layer is good .when you are in it good the water will look blood red .follow that layer !

I had a feeling that that was the case. I was getting probably 3 or so coarse flakes per each 2 gallons of dirt or so processed. Not great but ok for the area. Thanks for the input!

what state? Not asking for specifics. sometimes the red will stain your hands, how thick is the red layer ? you might get lucky and hit a thick spot ,make sure you clean out all crevices.you should do well. here in Ga. , when you hit it good the back of the dredge will be blood red. these are the flood layers. there can be several.some are thin ,but some are decent .hit a pocket of that and you had a good day!
