About 35 yrs ago, I recovered from a drawer in a old peddle Singer sewing machine nine large and 2 cuff or collar buttons. All the buttons have the New York State Seal on the front. On the back of eight of the large buttons and one small cuff buttin is stamped "Scoville Mfg. Co Waturbury". Stamped in one large button and one small button is "Scoville Button Co".

Do you think theses buttons are pre or post Civil War. Also any idea of value.

Thanks TonB

Yes! Civil War! Looks you have a great pile of New York State Seal Staff Buttons... awesome!

SCOVILL Mfg Co WATURBURY 1850-1865

I bet your glad you hung on to them!

Those are beautiful! They look un-dug.

Note: CW Era - dosnt mean they saw battle, were worn "in" a CW outfit, or whatever. Do you have more history on them? I do think they can be sold quickly but will not offer a value - A few Google searches should get you close for current prices paid. :)

Here's one on E-bay. $14.99 currently but there's more than a day before the auction ends. Could go up alot before then. Nice finds to say the least. Do the proper research before you sell them if that's your plan.

By the way, your buttons have alot more gilt and detail than the one I saw on e-bay. Should be worth alot more.

Hey Dad!

I remember those buttons I think. You had them in that clear round plastic case and they were sitting in cotton I think. Those the same ones?

Anyway, just wanted to post a reply here so you know I found you on the site!

Wow Wow Wow!

That's a complete set of buttons there---probably taken off a uniform and stashed when the uniform was in need of repairs. Awesome find there. Oh, and when you do that google search, make sure the button you're looking at the value of says "non-dug." I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the value of these. As a grouping, they might fetch slightly more than the per-button price.

Post Civil War

I am by no means an expert on Civil War era buttons, however, I do know what to look for as far as exact matches of backmarks versus what is in the text books.

If the backmark matches exactly the photo I am attaching, than those buttons are not Civil War era but are circa 1879 - 1890 or later, according to Dating Buttons by Warren K Tice. The key indicator in saying this is I cannot find one other backmark of Scovill's MF'G Co WATERBURY that has the letter small o in Co underlined............ (Small O with line underneath)

Note: Scovill buttons are of many slight variations of the backmarks and a little item like the Co and the underline is diagnostic in determining the age with matching all other letters and dots/rings/stars, etc.

Thanks Don...One large button and one cuff button has "Button Co. Waturbury" with as series of dotts...........................above and below the lettering. The rest are like the pic you posted. TomB

A photo would be needed to say for sure, if there is a star between the Co. and Waterbury that would help with dating. But from what you describe, IF no other marks or letters are there, like CT or any other symbols, the earliest I believe it could be would be late 1800's, that one is as described but has that Star I mentioned, which puts those also in the same era as the majority of them.
