Bottlebug...Thanks...Benson and Smith was a drug store company in the late 1800's to the early 1900's, not sure what the bottle was used for, probably some kind of medicine...here's a picture of a paper label Benson and Smith, still got the cod liver oil inside...

Wow Kaz, that is a great looking bottle with the label on it too, where do you find things like that? I am still stuck finding machine made crowns, how do you find the old stuff, how do I know where I should dig? thanks .

BottleBug

Benson and Smith paper label came from a old house that was going to be torn down...finding old bottles are not easy, I found places to dig by going to the library achieves looking at old maps, driving around a very old neighborhood and seeing a place being demoed, looking around old abandon houses, under the houses, hiking up the mountain looking for old plantation camps, while hiking looking for household plants that don't belong could be a sign of someone once living there a long time ago, asking old timers where they use to dump the rubbish, looking along ravines, looking for signs of glass along muddy waters and stream beds, diving in the ocean, there are so many places and things to do in finding old bottles, most of the time you will be bolo-head, luck has a lot to do with it and being consistent...hope this helps...by the way Bottlebug where are you from...aloha KAZ

Hi Kaz, thank for the info, I will try to find some good stuff with your tips. I am on the Big Island but it looks like everwhere I go people have dug there already and all I do is a lot of digging for common or broken stuff.
I like this site a lot, I found it in a google search, I also found a good hawaiian bottle site with google but I cant remember what the mane was, I think it was antique Hawaiian bottles dot com or antique Hawaiian collectables dot com or something like that but there were a lot of good pictures of Hawaiian bottles, I see some real nice ones here too, I remeber seeing on picture from a Hawaii digger that had a green Excelsior soda works Hilo, wow that was nice, I would love to get one of those, anyway thanks again.

Howzit Bottlebug :hello:

I grew up in Hilo and used to do allot of digging on the Big Island. The one sure fire place I know to dig is in the thick jungle along river banks. I used to dig in the jungle along the Wailuku River all the time. :hello2:

Just find any river along the Hamakua coast that had old raods, camps, mills or houses nearby and start digging on the slopes. Way back when, folks didn't bother going to the dump. They just tossed their trash into the jungle. I've found that near the top of the slope is best because most folks didn't bother to throw stuff too far.

So far as tools are concerned, you'll want a potato fork and a really sharp cane knife. Picks and shovels are pretty much worthless on jungle covered river banks - and you have to travel light because the terrain is steep and often dangerous (not to mention thick with vegetation). Start any old place and dig a test hole. It's hit and miss! You may did 20 test holes before you finally find the old glass and bottles you're looking for. Once you got the location nailed, start at the bottom of the bank and dig all the way to the top. Get everything!!! :headbang:

...Just wait outside of Kaz's house on his days off and follow him to the end of the rainbow. ;D
Was up!!! Still digging and finding I see. Been metal detecting only, too hot and too lazy to chase glass. :P

Howzit Da Sand Crab...longtime no hear, yipe still trying to chase glass...kinda slow lately so I been fishing which is not happening either, I caught one nice omilo and then nothing good after that...I did go to the Big Island in August to see the sites and visit friends in Hilo, Honokaa and Uncle Ling in Kona, I also went digging a few times with my friend from Hilo, we hit one area that was super old all bimal glass unfortunately all we found was a lot of pupu steak bones and a lot of booze bottles, I did find some Big Island ABM's from another area...I also pick-up a couple of bottles from the construction site at the Hilo airport, if you have not heard yet the construction workers when hit the mother load...hundreds and hundreds of Big Island bottles came up including some rare ones and some that are not in the bottle book, Steve G. from Honolulu even flew up to buy some bottles so you probably going see a lot of Big Island bottles at the next bottle show...aloha Kaz...eh answer you phone.

Hay Kaz, you got friends in Honokaa? I grew up in Waimea and grad from Honokaa.
Sodatraveler, thanks for the great info, but I dont think I got it all, I think it would be better if you came over here and showed me :)
Then Kaz and anyone else can come too.
Hay Kaz can you tell us more about the Hilo dig, it sounds like a good story, please tell us what you know about it :) :)
Also tell us what bottles did you get and what did Steven G. get?
thaks again you guys for all the pointers.

Bottlebug, my friends are from Honolulu but moved to the Big Island Kalopa, the bottle dig down the Hilo airport is close to the Army National Guard, they was doing construction and hit the mega Hilo bottle dump, lots and lots of bottles, the harder bottles that surfaced was some citron unlisted Pacific I believe only a few surfaced and one sold for $3000., other bottle where Hobson, tall Hardys, small letter Bay City, Hilo Soda Works HI, High Test funnel tops, Lime green Pacific, semi round Pacific 100's and 100's of common Excelsior, Hilo Owl drugs, Hawaiian whiskeys, orientals...unfortunately no more bottles lately according to my friend who lives in Hilo, too much looking for bottles, I heard the workers no longer can get bottles because they screwed there own self up by not working, the project was falling behind because to many workers was looking for bottles instead of working, I heard 2 workers had gotten fired for not listening and trying to sneak bottles out...you could go to the job site and wait outside at around 2:30-3:00 pau hana time and wait to see if the workers when score bottles to sell, I picked up only 2 bottles a dark Hoffschlaeger whiskey from the early 1900's and a nice greenish bluish Pacific that was all whittle out...aloha

I think that I've probably used up all of my bottlin passes for the year :'(

The wife has to approve my sode traveling in advance and the Holiday Season looks to be booked solid with family type stuff :help:

I'm already starting to plan a Big Island bottlin trip for next year though......maybe we can hook up and see about doing some jungle thrashing in search of BIMAL Hawaiian Sodes! :headbang:

On another subject, I was looking at 808kaz's paper label Benson, Smith & Co. Honolulu T.H. and it brought to mind a bottle I pulled on a recent trip to Oahu - the H.I. version! Check it out.....

BTW - these came from a place that we fondly referred to as "The Tar Pits" - unfortunately this particular bottlin spot is no longer available :'(

Hilo Finds

I just got this picture from a friend on the Big Island

All of these bottles came out of the same dig in Hilo :notworthy:

I don't know who has them and I won't say where they were dug, but those in "the know" will have no doubts where these beauties came from! :headbang:
