Cast brass. Looks old. Top definitely broken off.

I'd guess a broken flag topper.

It looks as if there is some sort of protrusion on the end opposite the round end. Is that perhaps wood? If so, then my guess would be some sort of small flagstaff finial.

I'm a beginning metal detector and am constantly learning about each item. I recent dug this item on the immediate outskirts of a civil war battle field in a field behind a 1950's house. Please help me identify what it is. Thank you and God bless!

I checked the bottom of the piece where it protrudes and it is in fact iron. What could it be now?
