My buddy Dan and I managed to squeeze in a hunt on Tues between the 1" of rain on Mon and the 2 additional inches on Wed. We started out in an early fog at our cornfield site that has produced 8 colonial silver coins and a few coppers. Since the remaining part of the field had finally been mowed down we concentrated our efforts there even though it has already been hit fairly hard. But relics were still popping up at a decent clip. We decided to change things up by early afternoon by moving on to 2 adjacent sites that we've hit before, including one where Dan scored a nice random cob. We didn't get skunked in these fields either, but nobody was able to pull out a coin. However, I was able to dig a couple of interesting pieces. One of them is a large brass item shown in 2 views below. I've dug the base to this before (with the square hole), but not sure of its identity, but I suspect it may be furniture related. I was also able to recover a very small apothecary weight, probably 18th century. Not sure what the symbols stand for, and I can't really make out the stamped image next to the "C". An interesting lead seal with some small yet intricate designs was also dug. And lastly, I found yet another flat iron. That makes 2 of them that are awaiting their turn in the electrolysis tank after that huge colonial andiron finishes up. Me, Dan and his father will be giving it another try tomorrow, although I think we're going to have a very muddy experience. But that's fine as long as we're diggin' some goodies.

Great finds! I'm going to go play in the mud tomorrow.

Cool finds. The item is a door knob correct? I just found one similar at an old site. I think I get to hunt these next several days. Cant wait to swing.

Great hunt Bill. Looks like Cross Potent may have ID'ed your item too. Cool piece!

Certainly a door knob. But your example is blown out, damaged, or plow chopped it appears. Perhaps it was repurposed by someone long ago. That square hole is a tell-tale sign.

Great finds there. I dug an apothecary weight from a turn of the century site earlier this year. Was my first ever.

Nice Eagle "I" and openwork button there. Any idea on the piece with the loops on it? Chatelaine piece?

Best Wishes and Happy Holidays,

Buckles

I think your seal might be a Royal Arms -- maybe like this:

Cloth Seal, Post 1603 Royal Arms

Cloth Seal, Arms of Stuart Britain, Image by StuE, Unknown Finder.
Found in England, 13mm, 1.7g.

One disc probably from a four disc alnage seal showing the royal arms of Stuart Britain.

These arms run from 1603 to 1688 but with a break from 1649 to 1660 for the Interregnum.

That looks like a very close match - nice catch! We've found a few 17th century relics here so I'm not surprised. Thanks again.

Thanks man. I guess I couldn't see the forest for the trees .... haha! Not sure how I missed that one.

That seal is the clear winner! You always have a great shot at a decent find digging that much, and turns out you got it.

Great bunch of finds! The seal is very cool! I think your apothecary weight is a coin weight as they usually come in rectangular shape. Good work!

Very nice, as usual. I am certain that the coins will show up shortly. GL&HH.

Holy cow. Great job on the ID. Thats surely the find of the day in my view.

Looks like a great hunt to me. Nice seal and coin weight! I got my first door knob a couple weeks ago HH!

When you squeeze in a hunt you get your times worth! Nice haul of saved relics!

The lead seal is really cool Bill and don't worry I wouldn't have realized that was a door knob either 😎
