Really did buy some "junk" silver today

Was visiting one of my coin dealer acquaintances today and was looking through the box of stuff that was going to be sent off to the refiner. I saw some Morgans and Peace dollars that had obviously been "cleaned", coin dealer says the owner took a jewelry cleaning rag to them before they were brought in to him. All of them were ruined as far as numismatic value goes, but most looked like they would have been AU at least if not improperly cleaned.

Anyway, I asked him what he thought he would get for them from the refiner, and after he told me I asked if I could pay the same amount to buy some and he said OK. I took most of them (used up all the extra cash I had) and left the few really bad ones.

I never buy US silver dollars due to the crazy high premiums, but today I was able to get these for $25 a piece, which at the time of purchase was under spot by a tiny bit.

There was some old US gold that was being sent to the refiner as well, but since I was broke after buying the silver I didn't even want to look at it because I would have wanted to buy it too.

If the coins haven't been scuffed and scratched in the polishing, then you can save them. Liver of Sulfur is your friend.

Thanks DD, but you can see very fine lines on the surface in the fields in good light without a loop on most of them. I thought about artificially toning them for fun. I have never tried it, but I read somewhere that if you take a hard boiled egg right out of the water and smash it in a plastic bag or other airtight place near the coins, the sulfur in the eggs
makes them tone really fast.

In any event, I will just consider them like any of my other old junk silver but cooler since they are dollars and I got them for a good price.

I clean encrusted shipwreck coins as a hobby and use Liver of Sulfur to re-tone the cleaned coins. Since the dollars are just junk silver, you should experiment on them as you can't harm them further.

I have never heard of Liver of Sulfur before, but if it tones them then I should give that a try. Thanks for the tip.
