I always said I will post every outing, however good or bad

My newbie Detectorist friend who has been hoovering up all the land permission (on my behave as well) invited me out to a 100 acre field & a 20 acre field. It was pretty hard going under foot with the clay lumbs making it hard to walk & difficult to get low to the ground.

The 20 acre field was quickly crossed off the priority list, as it had little in it, including lead.

The 100 acre field had an inviting hill in the middle, so we headed to the top. This was the only place I found several pieces of 1st century shell tempered pottery, but little signs of much else. This hill will be worth another look when conditions are right, but still a low priority.

Total finds after 3.5 hours were:
3 Buttons
1 Lead Token
2 Coins
Medieval buckle plate
17th century sword belt fittment

Above is the reality for most UK fields, finding the good areas can take some years! (unless you get lucky)

I know the feeling... been there done that.
Dave.

Yeap, just trying to get the message across. I'm lucky that I have over the years narrowed down several good sites which I keep hitting every year. That doesn't stop me taking a punt & trying to find new spots in the vast areas of nothing.

It was still a better than average day around here!

Hopefully my new farms will be better :-\

They will be if you can narrow the search. We had the thousands of acres drawn on a map & researched the aerial shots but not crop marks were showing on any of the fields. Doesn't mean there is nothing there, as only a few of my fields have them, it just means a lot of leg work. Hopefully the crop marks will be in your favour!

Nice going, but at the rate you've been going I am not sure there is much left on your island!!!

:icon_thumright: still nice finds

No crop marks in any of my new fields! I didn't get that one we looked at as he has a group search every now and then!

I didn't think you knew the extent of the new land (ie the two new farms)?

I know the feeling!
I got out today and found just ONE Civil War bullet. Oh well.
Guess it comes with the territory.

well, i've looked on google earth etc and can't see anything in the fields surrounding the farms :-\

I thought you mean't the one we looked at last time you were here, which i got a "no" from :'(

Yes that is reality for sure. But you keep finding the lead tokens and that is still always a good sign. But its typical of sites in England, at least that is my experience. Some sites are wonderful and others, well it looks like no one used them back then and they just stayed dormant all these years. Some people might think that a site has been searched out over the years, but that is not my experience either, I always find lead and coins on almost every site, but just few of them. The reason of course is that back then there were fewer people, and they needed less food, so that meant fewer farms, towns and houses. The bulk of land remained empty, there was much much more forest/woods back them before they started cutting down all the trees to build more buildings and boats. That should be the experience in every country I would imagine.

Well at least your getting out Cru. Ground to halt up here in Yorkshire, waiting now for harvest and watching the rain. :help:

It is always best to detect a place, rather than ignore it. Much better than always wondering what was there... :)

Best Wishes,

Buckleboy

It could be worse. I detected 9+ hours today and got about what you got. Same button and coin count, musketball, small buckle and a very tired body :-\ Still a great day!

Oh Dang! Another first century find?!! What's a guy to do?
